A Virtual Design Studio, which comprises of a team of designers who collaborate via electronic communication, was established in 1995 to link a number of Universities World Wide. Universities participating in the exercise included: The Univ
ersity of Sydney, Australia; Cornell University, USA; ETH, Zurich, Switzerland; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; The National University of Singapore and the University of British Columbia, Canada.
The focus of this International Virtual Design Studio was the design of a "live and work" environment in remote locations, assuming that electronic communication allows us to work without leaving our living environment. Students worked on a site selected by their own studio instructors and provided a resource to students at other universities involved in this studio project. The World Wide Web provided the repository for representing and storing all design project information. The Web supported the async hronous activities among the participants through access to various pieces of design information. The synchronous collaboration was supported through video conferencing facilities, shared whiteboard, and shared CAD. |
