Values in Studio Teaching

This two hour interactive workshop is based upon an HEFCE funded programme looking at the organisational structures adopted by schools of architecture, and how they impact upon the teaching and learning in the schools.

The workshop allows schools of architecture and landscape to explore the values that they hold with regard to design studio teaching. It enables them to evaluate and reflect upon the extent to which these values are aligned with the learning, teaching and assessment activities taking place within the school. The workshop could form a useful exercise for those preparing a critical self appraisal document in anticipation of a professional validation visit or institutional review but will also be of benefit for any department evaluating its curriculum in an attempt to achieve continuous improvement.

This workshop has already been run in a number of schools of architecture. Those participating found the experience a useful one, particularly as it enabled identification of a school’s individuality, rather than how well they complied with an externally determined professional syllabus.

Aims

This workshop aims to engage schools of architecture and landscape in discussion about the values they hold and how they might be better aligned with their schools teaching, learning and assessment activities.

Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • Identified a number of key values held individually and collectively by members of staff in the school.
  • Identified those values that are perceived to be successfully integrated into their teaching, learning and assessment, and the reasons why this is successful
  • Recognised those values that are less well aligned with the curriculum and identified possible strategies for improvement

Prerequisites:

Participants should be actively involved in design teaching within their schools of architecture.

Maximum Numbers: 25

Fee Charged: £100

Facilitators:
The workshop will be facilitated by one of the following:

  • Oren Lieberman, Strathclyde University, School of Architecture and Building Science
  • Martin Pearce, Portsmouth School of Architecture
  • Walter Matsika, Portsmouth School of Architecture
  • Andrew Roberts, Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff

The facilitators for this workshop were all participants in the HEFCE Funded project. They all teach within their respective schools of architecture
