Student Symposium in the Built Environment 2005
Introduction
The 2005 annual North West Student Symposium was this year jointly organised
by CEBE in collaboration with the University of Bolton. Hosted by Bolton on
27th April 2005, the event brings together final level Built Environment students
and academic staff from Universities throughout the North West of England, together
with employers with an interest in research. It is designed to provide an opportunity
to exchange ideas and study experiences and allow an exploration of the potential
use of innovative research within industry. Students are able to present the
findings of their final year dissertations to peers and staff from partner institutions.
The symposium draws support from the Association of Building Engineers, The
Chartered Institute of Building, The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors,
The British Institute of Architectural Technologists and the Construction Industry
Council. A wide range of topics were covered this year, including a best practice
model for urban regeneration, how the terrorist bombing of 1996 affected Manchester’s
urban regeneration, the classification of contaminated land as waste and how
successfully ISO 9000 quality standards have been implemented in the Construction
industry.
Prizes were awarded in the best presentation category. The best paper category
is still to be finalised. The respective winners for the former were Chris Lord
(University of Salford) and Linsey Brown (University of Central Lancashire)
who each received £200 for best presentation. Both presentation winners
are pictured below, alongside Alan Cornthwaite, Head of the Department of the
Built Environment, the University of Bolton.

Commended presentation winners were Ebun Akinsete (The University of Bolton)
and Mike Walmsley (University of Salford) who each received £100. They
