Special Interest Group - Business Skills in the Built Environment
Introduction
Enterprise & Commercial Learning for Built Environment Graduates
The development of an "enterprise" culture has been recognised as
the key to maintaining and enhancing the quality of life within the UK over
the longer term. As a result, the UK government has provided significant resources
to improve links between the Higher Education sector and the industrial and
commercial sectors. The key to this improvement is the provision of suitable
learning opportunities at University level to ensure that graduates have both
an awareness of and the skills, to make a useful contribution to a knowledge
based economy. The government has placed particular emphasis on the need for
engineering and science graduates to obtain such skills and an awareness of
the importance of enterprise and wealth creation to society.
All Built Environment departments now need to provide teaching which will bring
business skills into the curriculum. However, given academics’ limited
personal expertise of commercial environments, this area of provision is seen
as particularly problematic.
To address this need, CEBE has funded a special interest group, based at the
University of Sheffield, to provide a concise, searchable list of resources
for the teaching of business and commercial skills to students in universities.
The resources included have been selected as they have been designed specifically
for teaching students in a University environment. The database is organised
by key business skills. If you are interested in using any of the materials
listed, you will need to contact the appropriate contact shown at the end of
the resource description.
