E-Portfolios Project

Reports and Guides generated by the project

Literature Review

This document reviews the literature on encouraging reflection in work based learning. It is based primarily on literature generated in the areas of Education healthcare and management. It looks at the purpose of reflection, the varying levels of reflection that students achieve and the support and structure required to encourage reflection in students. It looks specifically at how E-Portfolios can be used to encourage reflection, and categorises the different types of portfolio commonly developed by students.

Analysis of Student Interviews

Semi-Structured interviews were carried out with 21 students undertaking periods of workplace experience, which included a requirement to record and reflect upon their professional experience. This report summarises and analyses the students responses. It highlights student's perceived outcomes as a result of recording their experience and attempts to identify those factors that can improve or constrain those outcomes

Briefing Guide

Following the finding of the Literature review and Student Interviews, a briefing guide has been produced to help those tutors responsible for courses where students are expected to reflect upon their experience during periods of workplace experience. It looks at the rationale for encouraging reflection, ways in which it might be encouraged. Information is given on the choice of recording system, and how levels of reflection might be measured.

Evaluation of demonstration projects

Three demonstration e-portfolios were set up using generic e-portfolio systems. The aim was determine how appropriate each of the systems was to support the recording and reflection on workplace experience in Built Environment subject areas. This document compares the three systems to show the benefits and disadvantages of each.
